Thai-Khmer silver beads are handmade from 95% silver which is purer than sterling silver. A thin strip of silver is pounded and formed into the desired bead shape, then filled with pitch, a tar-like substance such as tree resin. The bead is then inscribed with a design and oxidized to accentuate its pattern. This ancient method has been handed down from generation to generation and is still done entirely by local villagers.
